The night sky twinkles with the light of billions of stars.
But during the day, we only see one star—the Sun.
The Sun isn’t the biggest star in the universe. But it looks
gigantic to us. That’s because it’s so close.
What’s the Sun made of? Burning gases. And boy, are they
hot! The Sun’s surface is a fiery 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit
(6,000 degrees Celsius). Sizzlin’!
The Sun and the rest of the solar system formed about 4.5
billion years ago. Scientists think our star will keep on burning
bright for another 5 million years. That’s good news because
life on Earth couldn’t survive without the Sun’s heat and light.
Q:
Why doesn’t the
Sun go to college?
A:
It already has
thousands of
degrees.
