But wait, that’s not all. If it weren’t for electromagnets, electric
motors wouldn’t exist. And electric motors are important.
Really important. Electric motors power everything from
vacuum cleaners and refrigerators to power tools and
electric cars.
How do these motors work? They turn electrical energy
into motion.
A motor consists of an iron shaft wrapped in a wire coil. As
electric current travels through the wire, the shaft becomes
an electromagnet. A second magnet surrounding the shaft
causes the shaft to spin, and that keeps the motor running.
Some motors are as small as the head of a pin. Others are
bigger than a tractor-trailer truck. But they all work the same
way.
