The Bonneville Salt Flats are a
barren, white stretch of land that seems
to have been transported to Earth from
another world. The area consists of
about thirty thousand acres of salt
crust atop soft mud on what was an
ancient lake. Because the land is almost
perfectly flat, it is used by high-speed
auto racers for test drives. In 1970, a
rocket car driven by racer Gary
Gabolich reached an amazing 622.4
miles per hour on the flats. Many
moviemakers come to this bizarre
landscape to shoot films—especially
those with a science-fiction theme.
