Every single day people use a basic understanding of this science to
move about and avoid being hit by other moving things. A good illustra-
tion of this is the game of dodge ball. A thrown ball moves so predictably
that a person can either dodge the throw or step into the ball’s path and
try to catch it. We know the ball is not going to suddenly change direction
in mid-flight; thrown objects simply do not act that way. Imagine the game
of baseball if this were not the case! Many more people would be hit by
pitches if the ball randomly changed direction. The same principle is true
of falling things—they tend to fall straight to the ground as gravity acts on
