O
n July 16, 2004, Lori Hacking received a phone call at work. Wit-
nesses couldn’t tell what was discussed during that call, but Hack-
ing was clearly upset and left work early.
Friends and family members, other than her husband, report last seeing her
around 9:00 two days later. A clerk at a convenience store said he saw Lori and
her husband that afternoon. Lori’s husband, Mark, made a phone call to police
on July 19 to report that she had not returned from an early-morning jog. He
had gone out earlier that morning to buy a new mattress, and claimed his wife
was not home when he came back. In the kitchen of their home, however, police
discovered blood consistent with a stabbing. It appeared someone had tried to
clean up the bloodstain using soap and water. Eventually, Mark Hacking was
charged with aggravated murder. A short time later, Lori’s body was found in a
local landfill—but her blood had told its tale days earlier.
