What do these insects have in common? Well, for starters,
they can shake their butts. Yup, that’s right. Almost all bees,
wasps, and ants have a narrow “waist” between their thorax
and abdomen. That means they can—and do—wiggle their
back ends.
But that’s not all. These insects have compound eyes, so
they have great eyesight. And most defend themselves by biting
or stinging their enemies.
Many bees, wasps, and ants live in large groups called
colonies. Each nest has a queen to lay eggs and thousands—
even millions—of workers.
Not all of these insects have wings. But the ones that do flap
furiously as they fly. The wings make a low, buzzing sound.
