If it’s small and it flies, then it must be a fly. Right?
Not always.
Flies are a specific group of insects. And believe it or not,
mosquitoes belong to the same group. What makes these
insects special? They have just one pair of wings. But that
doesn’t slow them down a bit. In fact, they’re the best fliers in
the insect world. Many flies can hover, spin, and even fly
backward. Wow!
Like other insects, flies begin their lives as eggs. The
larvae
that hatch are called maggots.
Maggots chow down on rotting
flesh for a few weeks, and then
become pupae. Adult flies feed
on just about anything you can
think of—from plant juices to
animal wastes and even human
blood. Yuck!
