Think all soil is the same? Well, it’s not. According to scientists,
there are three different kinds.
Soil with large bits of rock is called sand. Silt has medium-
sized bits. And clay has the smallest bits of all. In fact, you’d need
a microscope to see them. Now that’s small!
Go outside and grab a handful of soil. Squeeze it, and watch
what happens.
Add a little water to your soil, and squeeze again. What
happens now?
Here’s how you’ll know what kind of soil you have:
Mostly Sand
Dry
Feels gritty, falls apart
Wet
Holds together but crumbles easily
Mostly Silt
Dry
Feels smooth and silky, holds together
Wet
Holds together but cannot be rolled
Mostly Clay
Dry
Holds together but cannot be rolled
Wet
Holds together and can be rolled
One! Two!
Three!
