Metamorphic rock can also form in another way. Remember
those tectonic plates moving across Earth’s surface? Well,
sometimes they pull apart. And sometimes they crash together.
Twothings canhappenwhenplates crashtogether.Sometimes
one plate slides down below the other one. Other times, the two
plates keep on pushing and shoving. They ram and slam into
one another year after year. Finally, the edges of the two plates
begin to rise. They lift the land to form a mighty mountain.
The rocks inside the growing mountain are twisted, folded,
and squeezed. All that pressure changes the minerals inside.
And metamorphic rock forms.
