Neptune is far out—more than 2.7 billionmiles (4.4 billion km)
from the Sun. The big blue planet takes 165 Earth years to orbit
the Sun. But a day on Neptune is just sixteen hours long.
Neptune has plenty of neighbors. Four faint rings and at
least thirteen moons circle the gas giant.
What are the icy planet’s claims to fame? It has two. It’s the
farthest planet from the Sun. And it has the strongest winds
ever recorded. During a hurricane on Earth, wind gusts max
out at 150 miles (240 km) per hour. Think that’s fast? Then
hold on to your hat! Neptune’s whipping winds can reach
speeds of 1,200 miles (1,900 km) per hour.
